Saturday contest at Lee marks Knights men's soccer's final nonconference match

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team will wrap up the nonconference portion of its schedule Saturday when the Knights travel to Lee for a 5 p.m. (ET) matchup.

Heading into the contest with the Flames (1-1-1), Bellarmine is 1-1 after opening the regular season with a 1-0 victory at Cedarville before falling 2-1 at Trevecca Nazarene.

"We came away from the weekend with mixed feelings," Bellarmine Coach Tim Chastonay said. "On one hand, we controlled the possession and created numerous opportunities to score. On the other hand, we came away with very few goals and only one win on the weekend. The weekend did give us some answers in regard to where we need to focus some of our training. We definitely found some flaws defensively, but our focus this week has been in the attacking third of the field."

Freshman midfielder Nate Girao scored the game-winning goal against Cedarville and freshman forward Laslo Wanger accounted for Bellarmine's goal against Trevecca Nazarene. There certainly could have been more: The Knights combined to outshoot the two opponents 35-11, including 17-5 on goal.

"It was great to see the two freshmen score," Chastonay said. "We are very young in our attacking positions, so I think we will see many young guys score this season. As a whole, this team is very young; we only have two seniors. Many of our goals last year came from that senior class, and they produced numerous big goals for us throughout the season. As a staff, we need to remain patient with this young group. They should get better as the season progresses."

The match will be the home opener for Lee, which opened the season with three road contests. The Flames' first two games unfolded in the Sunshine State, where they fell 1-0 to Florida Tech before defeating Embry-Riddle 1-0. Most recently, Lee, a member of the Gulf South Conference, posted a 1-1 draw at Lincoln Memorial. Jared McWhorter has a goal and an assist for the Flames, who went 6-6-4 last season.

"Lee looks to be off to a solid start this season," Chastonay said. "Similar to Trevecca, we don't know a whole lot about them. We will need to have a good approach to the game from the start and be able to make adjustments as we go along in the game."

While Lee faced a cluster of road matches to start the season, that stretch pales in comparison to Bellarmine's, which runs seven games deep before the Knights play at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. As the shot totals suggest (16-2 over Cedarville and 19-9 over Trevecca Nazarene), the Knights had very little trouble settling in during their first two road contests.

"We did start a bit sluggish on Saturday (against Trevecca), but for the most part, playing on the road was not a big factor this past weekend," Chastonay said. "It will be interesting to see how this group approaches the next few weekends of playing away from home."
