LOUISVILLE, Ky.—After opening at home against a pair of top 10 opponents over the Labor Day weekend, the Bellarmine field hockey team hits the road for its first away games of the year.
With a 1-1 record against their heady opening-week competition, the Knights hit the road with the confidence they can play with top-ranked teams as they take on Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Seton Hill University on Saturday and Sunday.
Last season the Knights took a 3-2 victory over the IUP Crimson Hawks as BU scored on the game's last play to pull out the win. If Bellarmine wants to duplicate that result this year, the Knights will need to find a new source of offense as seniors (
Elle Lichte-1 and
Carly Anson-2) tallied BU's goals in the 2017 contest. The Crimson Hawks, who finished 5-12 last season, are making their 2018 debut against the Knights.
On Sunday, the Knights will travel to Greensburg, Pennsylvania to square off with the Griffins of Seton Hill in the teams' first meeting since a 3-0 victory by Bellarmine in 2016. Last year, SHU went 4-14 and are 0-1 this year after opening the 2018 season with road loss to No. 9 Merrimack.
Just two games into the season, Bellarmine doesn't have a body of work to establish much in the way of statistical leaders.
Jillian Fazio and
Merit Harris share the team lead in goals with one apiece. Fazio drilled a penalty stroke against St. Anselm while Harris dealt the Hawks the loss by nailing a shot in the overtime period off a pass from
Lindsay Reynolds.
Defensively,
Heather Gregory has spent the bulk of the time in the cage and has 15 saves with a .750 save percentage in just over 125 minutes of action.
