Trip to meet Panthers, Bearcats on tap for No. 14 men's soccer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 14 Bellarmine University men's soccer team finishes the regular season with four matches at home, but before that the Knights will finish off a four-game road stretch in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Bellarmine's final road trip will feature a 2:30 p.m. (ET) contest Friday at Drury (7-4-1, 5-3-1 GLVC) and a 3:30 p.m. outing Sunday at Southwest Baptist (1-10, 1-8). The Knights (8-0-3, 5-0-3) are one of two remaining teams in the GLVC unbeaten in league play — McKendree is 7-0-2 and just ahead of Bellarmine in the standings.

"Overall, we have been very happy with the group and the results, although our play has been somewhat inconsistent," Knights Coach Tim Chastonay said. "I think we are hoping to hit our stride as we approach the last few weeks of the regular season. Health has been a problem for us all season. Some of the players who stepped in and have played bigger roles have done a great job. Getting some of the injured players back should make us a deeper team for the stretch run."

Drury is tied for fourth in the GLVC. The Panthers are 2-0-1 over their last three matches, wrapping a 4-0 win over Southern Indiana and a 2-0 victory over Quincy around a scoreless tie with Truman State. In four of its five league wins, Drury piled up four goals per contest. Jamie O'Brien has amassed nine goals.

"Drury looks outstanding this season," Chastonay said. "They possess all the right tools to make a deep run this season. Defensively, they are making it tough to score and the keeper (Yannick Lamers) was just (GLVC Defensive) Player of the Week. Offensively, they have a serious goal scorer (in O'Brien) and he could be very hard to shut down."

Southwest Baptist, which is a new member of the GLVC, will host Indianapolis on Friday. Isaiah Waddy and Kevin Zavala have combined for seven goals for the Bearcats.

"Southwest Baptist is new to the conference, and we have never seen them before," Chastonay said. "They are playing teams tough at home, which is similar to most GLVC teams. I would expect a hard game on Sunday after a very tough match on Friday. This road trip looks as tough as any you get in this conference."

Facing a 1-0 deficit with less than 10 minutes remaining, Bellarmine scored the tying goal and ultimately tied Illinois Springfield 1-1 on Friday. The Knights then captured a 2-1 victory Sunday over Lewis. Bellarmine is 2-0-2 on the road this season. The Knights hold a 20-game unbeaten streak dating back to last season.

"I think we have to look at last weekend as a positive step for the team this year," Chastonay said. "Playing any games on the road in the GLVC is hard, so to come back with a win and a draw is fine. The biggest concern for us is still our inability to play well for longer stretches. We look good at times but can't maintain the level for 90 minutes."
