LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Four Bellarmine University players were recognized in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's preseason edition.
In a section that highlighted players from each region in Division II, senior catcher
Chris Gambert and junior outfielder
Matt Higgins were acknowledged as Preseason All-Americans, junior outfielder/infielder
Jacob Mulcahy was tabbed as a "Player to Watch" and freshman first baseman
Tommy Dilz was cited as a "Newcomer to Watch."
Gambert and Higgins both received multiple All-America accolades last season. Gambert was a second-team selection by the D2CCA and ABCA, while Higgins was honored on the third team by those two organizations and garnered honorable-mention notice from the NCBWA. They were both consensus All-Midwest picks by those same three organizations, and both were recipients of first-team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference plaudits.
Last season, Gambert led Bellarmine in home runs (16) and slugging percentage (.745), ranked second in batting average (.391) and on-base percentage (.465), and was third in RBIs (51), doubles (15) and total bases (137).
In 2019, Higgins led the Knights in batting average (.419), hits (90), runs scored (63), on-base percentage (.498) and total bases (151), tied for first in walks (34) and was second in RBIs (63), doubles (18) and slugging percentage (.702) while tallying 13 home runs.
Mulcahy missed a chunk of time last season due to injury but still batted .325 with three homers, eight doubles, 26 RBIs and 31 runs scored.
Dilz is a true freshman that came to Bellarmine after a standout career at Upper Arlington High School in Ohio. It's anticipated that he could have an immediate impact on the Knights.
Bellarmine went 34-21 last season, captured the GLVC Tournament title and earned a third straight berth in the NCAA Tournament.
