LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine University Men's Basketball Head Coach
Scott Davenport announced today that the NCAA has granted Austin Peay transfer Sam DeVault a waiver that makes him immediately eligible to play.
A 6-foot-10, 220-pound forward, DeVault transferred to Bellarmine after competing his freshman season with the Governors in 2019-20. The 2020-21 campaign will mark the first in Division I and the ASUN Conference for the Knights, who have transitioned from Division II.
Davenport commended Bellarmine Associate AD for Compliance
Annie Coryell, Bellarmine Director of Athletics
Scott Wiegandt, Austin Peay Head Coach Matt Figger and Austin Peay Director of Athletics Gerald Harrison and his administration for their efforts in DeVault's NCAA waiver process.
DeVault, a native of Evansville, Indiana, is a Reitz Memorial High School graduate, the same school as recent Bellarmine alumnus
Adam Eberhard and current Knight
Dylan Penn. DeVault averaged 14 points and hauled in 5.3 rebounds per game his senior season at Memorial while earning honorable-mention All-State accolades. His junior year, he teamed with Penn to lead the Tigers to a 20-5 record while Memorial won a share of the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference regular-season title.
Last season, DeVault saw action in 16 games for the Governors, averaging 2.3 points a game while draining better than 60 percent of his 3-pointers.
"We targeted Sam while he was still playing at Memorial in Evansville," Davenport said. "We feel his combination of size and skill make him ideal for our style of play. More importantly, Sam is exactly the kind of young man we feel will thrive at Bellarmine University. We feel confident that his background of playing for a tremendous high school program, an excellent summer program, the Louisville Legends coached by Dion Lee, and a year of seasoning at Austin Peay, will aid him in being ready to adjust quickly."
