LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Jalen Madison will be reuniting with
Chase Broughton once again.
Former teammates and coaching colleagues at the University of Southern Indiana, Madison has joined the Bellarmine University track and field coaching staffs of Men's Head Coach Broughton and Women's Head Coach
Angela Hapner Musk as an assistant coach specializing in throws. The Knights are set to compete in their first season in Division I in 2020-21.
"Coach Musk and I couldn't be more thrilled to bring Jalen on as our new throws coach," Broughton said. "We are confident that his energy, experience and recruiting ability will help take our throws program to new heights as we transition to the DI level."
Madison and Broughton's competitive and coaching careers overlapped at Southern Indiana. Before arriving at Bellarmine, Madison was an assistant coach with the Screaming Eagles for two seasons. In that timeframe, his throwers combined to amass 17 top-10 performances in the USI record books. Last season, his throwers broke two freshman records in the men's and women's weight throw.
"I am pleased and blessed to be welcomed into the Bellarmine track and field family," Madison said. "Bellarmine is a place I'm very familiar with being a former GLVC foe. It's a program that I've always held in high regard and am very excited to be a part of as we transition to the Division I level. I've always wanted to be a part of a program at a Catholic institution where I could connect academics, athletics and faith. Bellarmine is a perfect fit for my family. I want to thank everyone for their support as we build for greatness. Go Knights!"
Competitively at Southern Indiana, Madison set a program record for the discus as a senior at the 2017 GLVC Outdoor Championships. He cracked the Screaming Eagles' record book in five throwing events during his career.
Madison graduated from Southern Indiana in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in sports management. Before returning to USI to coach, Madison served as an assistant coach/academic coordinator for the cross country/track and field teams at Division III Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Missouri. The track and field student-athletes broke 43 school records during his time at Fontbonne. Madison oversaw a women's cross country team that was named U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association All-Academic in 2017. His women's cross country runners boasted the highest GPA in the country across all NCAA divisions with a 3.94 mark.
Madison is USA Track & Field Level One Certified and sits on the board of directors for USA Track & Field Indiana, where he also serves as chair of the youth committee. He has a wife, Rachel.
