LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University wrestling team made history Sunday afternoon in Knights Hall, posting the first Division I duals win — and Southern Conference victory — in program history.

After getting clipped 27-18 by The Citadel (4-2, 3-1 SoCon), Bellarmine (1-5, 1-3) regrouped to register a landmark 32-18 win over Presbyterian (0-2, 0-2). The Citadel defeated Presbyterian 32-10 in the tri-meet.

"To have our first win at home in front of all the people that support us means a lot," Knights Coach Spencer Adams said. "The family members of the guys on the team, people from the community, the events management crew, team physician and trainers, our administration and so many others. I'd be in trouble if I didn't mention my wife and kids who were in the stands as well. To share that win with everyone who makes this program so great is such a good feeling. I wouldn't have it any other way."

Against Presbyterian, Bellarmine had to work out of a 15-3 hole, as freshman Chase Yost notched the Knights' lone win over the first four matches with a 3-2 decision over Jacob Brasseur at 141. Senior Alex Rhine cut the deficit to 15-8 with a 16-1 tech fall over Bryton Goering at 157.

Bellarmine got within one after senior Eric Beck was the recipient of a forfeit at 165, and sophomore Devan Hendricks swung the advantage in the Knights' favor after pinning Victor Tello at 174. Bellarmine sealed the historic win after freshman Easton Tobia (184) and junior Gavin Grime (197) collected forfeits.

Against The Citadel, Yost edged Tyler Seeley 4-2 in overtime, and Hendricks went an extra session with Cole Burke before prevailing 6-4. Rhine and Beck captured falls over Grant Speer and Ethan Willis, respectively.

In the extra matches against The Citadel, which did not impact the team score, freshman Logan Hoskins defeated Sebastian Collazo by fall at 149, and Tobia held off Cooper Youngblood 6-5 at 184.

In the extra matches against Presbyterian, freshman Adonis Boyd notched a 14-4 major decision over Vladimir Gorrin, and Hoskins romped with a 14-2 major decision over Michael Ramirez.

"I'm super proud of these guys today," Adams said. "We wrestled with heart and intensity. The crowd got into it, the teams were all battling tough and there were a lot of close nail-biter-type matches. That's a great day of wrestling, win or lose! I'm just glad we came out with a win. These guys have been working hard and have earned it. Now it's back to the drawing board; time to fix some more things before next weekend and keep improving."

Bellarmine will compete next Sunday at Gardner-Webb, facing the host school and Virginia Military Institute in a SoCon tri-meet.
