LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team will wrap up the regular season when the Knights host ASUN counterpart Jacksonville at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Six of the eight teams in the league earn invitations to the ASUN Championship. Central Arkansas, Lipscomb, Stetson and FGCU have secured bids. Bellarmine (6-7-1, 2-4 ASUN) and Jacksonville (3-10, 2-4) are among the four teams, along with Liberty and North Florida, fighting for the remaining two spots. All four have earned six points in conference play.
Over its last three ASUN games, Jacksonville fell 2-0 to Central Arkansas and 3-0 to Lipscomb after defeating Liberty 2-0. Reed Davis is the Dolphins' leading goal scorer with three.
Saturday will also represent Senior Day for Bellarmine. Here's a look at the five Knights who will be honored:
Greg Fischer: Fischer has been a stalwart in the holding midfield and on the backline for Bellarmine. The native of Prospect, Kentucky and team captain is a five-year starter who is the verge of 70 starts and 6,000 minutes played in his career. A craftsman on set pieces, Fischer ranks eighth all-time in program history in assists with 20, including three this season, and has netted six career goals. Last season, Fischer was recognized with the United Soccer Coaches' College Player Award of Distinction and was an ASUN Honor Roll recipient. Prior to that, he earned multiple Academic All-GLVC accolades.
"Greg has developed into a really good midfielder," Knights Coach
Tim Chastonay said. "He can play on the outside and deliver dangerous services or be a ball mover from the central midfield role. Greg breaks up plays, intercepts passes, wins second balls and organizes the team from his defensive midfield role. His delivery on set pieces has been tremendous over the years. Greg has been a longtime captain of the team and his leadership will be hard to replace. He does a great job in the classroom and is an example of a true student-athlete."
Nate Girao: Girao has been a cornerstone defender for Bellarmine the last three years after making an impact in the attack as a midfielder his freshman season. The product of Oldham, Kentucky and team captain has racked up 40 starts and over 4,000 minutes played in his four years. In the spring, Girao accounted for the program's first-ever goal in Division I. He scored four goals as a freshman, including three game-winners, before moving to a primary role on defense. Girao was an ASUN Honor Roll recipient last season and was an Academic All-GLVC honoree prior to that.
"Nate has been a steady performer in our backline for four years," Chastonay said. "He is always called upon to deal with the some of the opponent's best attacking players. Nate is solid in 1v1 situations, wins balls out of the air and tackles very well. His fitness level and pace allow him to get up the field and join the attack. He has scored some big goals in the past and has a number of assists from his dangerous service. Nate was a captain this season and has grown into a very good leader. He competes very well in the classroom as well."
Zabdiel Justiniano: Justiniano transferred to Bellarmine in 2019 after beginning his collegiate career at Eastern Illinois. Competing in the spring and then fall of 2021, the Louisville native has started in 18 of his 21 games with the Knights. Justiniano has started every contest this season and is closing in on 800 minutes played in the midfield. He garnered ASUN Honor Roll acknowledgement last season and was recognized with Academic All-GLVC plaudits prior to that.
"Zabdiel, as a transfer, has been a great addition to our team," Chastonay said. "He brought qualities to the group that helped us improve as we transitioned to the NCAA D1 level. His experience at the D1 level was very helpful to our team. Zabdiel is a good 1v1 attacking player and can serve a good ball from the flank. He is not afraid to get in on a tackle and can defend his position. In addition to his quality on the field, he has been an excellent student."
Micah Linscott: Linscott is among the most decorated players to ever don a Bellarmine uniform. The senior midfielder was a D2 All-American in 2019. Last season, the native of Radcliff, Kentucky was a second-team ASUN All-Conference selection. Before that, Linscott was twice named first-team All-GLVC and first-team All-Midwest Region after combining for 22 goals and 11 assists his sophomore and junior years. His 29 career goals rank 11th all-time in program history, and he's also amassed 15 assists. Linscott has exceeded 5,000 minutes played and eclipsed 60 starts in his five years with the Knights.
"Micah has developed into a very good playmaker at the attacking midfield position," Chastonay said. "He has done a great job of creating and finishing chances for himself or creating for his teammates. Micah also takes responsibility in his job to defend in an area higher up the field. He has a good understanding of the game tactically and finds himself in good positions to finish. Micah is dangerous on both sides of the ball on set pieces because of his ability in the air."
Connor Range: Range has taken his place among the most accomplished goalkeepers in Knights history. The native of St. Louis and team captain has made nearly 60 starts in goal and ranks in the top-5 all-time in goals-against average and shutouts while posting a 33-14-7 record. In 2019, Range was an All-GLVC and All-Midwest Region selection after setting a single-season program record with a 0.72 goals-against average and tying for second with seven shutouts while piling up 16 wins. He was named to the ASUN Honor Roll last season.
"Connor has been a regular for the team in goal over the last four years," Chastonay said. "He has a presence in goal and has been very steady over the years. Connor is a good shot-stopper and can deal with crosses very well. His kicking and distribution allow us to build from the back or play direct at times. He communicates and organizes very well. His record in goal over the last four years speaks for itself. Connor has been a consistent winner."
