Men's soccer, now regionally ranked, heads to Dayton for midweek contest

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team will shift to nonconference play for a midweek contest at Dayton.

Coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over No. 15 Liberty, Bellarmine (2-2) will square off with the Flyers (0-1) at 7 p.m. (ET) Wednesday.

Dayton tied for second in the Atlantic 10 Conference preseason poll. The Flyers finished third overall in 2019 and advanced to the A-10 Championship game before falling 1-0 to Rhode Island. Dayton was 6-2 in conference play and 13-8 overall last season.

Dayton has played in only one official game — a 3-2 loss to Bowling Green on Feb. 19 — but that was sandwiched in between exhibitions against Akron (2-1 win) and Bellarmine's former DII Midwest Region colleague Cedarville (6-2 win). Kingsford Adjei and Jake Feiner scored the goals for the Flyers against Bowling Green, whom they outshot 14-9.

The United Soccer Coaches ranked Bellarmine at No. 6 in the Atlantic Region this week. The regional ranking, the first ever for Bellarmine in Division I, came after the Knights upset Liberty to move to 2-0 in ASUN play.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Brozovich was honored as the ASUN Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, while sophomore forward Juan Ballas was lauded as the Player of the Week. Ballas scored both goals against Liberty, including the golden goal late in the first overtime. Brozovich stopped a Flames' penalty kick five minutes into the match.
