Softball schedule change sends Knights to St. Louis for Saturday doubleheader

4/29/2021 1:42:00 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University softball schedule has seen yet another change.  Originally slated to close out the regular season with a three-game series at Lipscomb, the Knights will now travel to St. Louis University on Saturday to take on the Billikens in a twin bill at noon (CDT).

Lipscomb was forced to cancel the final series due to COVID protocols.  It is highly unlikely the games will be made up due to the ASUN Conference regular season coming to an end.

The Billikens, who are members of the Atlantic 10 Conference, are coming into the Saturday doubleheader with a 17-25 record overall (10-10 in the A10). The St. Louis offense is being powered by junior Gabbie Kowalik, who leads the team in batting (.402), homers (9), triples (5), and RBIs (32).  Other top producers for the Billikens are Kat Lane and Sadie Wise, who are hitting .353 and .348 respectively.  Lane leads SLU in stolen bases with 13 while Wise is tied with Kowalik for the team lead in RBIs with 32.

In the circle, Saint Louis features the 1-2 tandem of Chloe Wendling and Aubrey Hacke, who share very similar statistics on the year.  Wendling is the leader in earned run average (3.91), appearances (25), wins (8), and innings pitched (102).  Hacke is a close second in nearly every category, sporting a 3.99 ERA while logging exactly 100 innings.  She's also the strikeout leader, punching out 67 batters on the season.

Bellarmine enters the weekend 6-29 and in the midst of a nine-game losing skid. Grace Werner paces the Knights with a .298 batting average with catcher Sydney Young and infielder Hannah Webb both hitting at a .250 clip on the season.  That threesome also lead the offense in other important individual stats. Werner is stolen base leader with 10; Young leads in RBIs with 14, and Webb's 26 hits are tops on the team.

Freshman Carson Goatley has been the primary option at pitcher for the Knights with 95 innings pitched while leading the staff with four wins.  Senior Natalie Magnus has taken over the team lead in ERA at 3.16 over 44.1 innings.  Junior Megan Murphy is coming off an impressive outing against Liberty and is second on the team in innings pitched at 59.1.
