LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University field hockey team got its first taste of competition on Sunday afternoon as the Knights scrimmaged crosstown rival Louisville at Trager Stadium.
While the Cardinals were impressive in the actual game portion of the scrimmage, Bellarmine scored a couple of victories in the postgame practice sessions by winning both the 7-on-7 overtime simulation and a practice shootout
Louisville, an NCAA semifinalist a year ago, dominated the opening 60 minutes of game action and shutout the Knights for the victory. However, as the scrimmage moved to the extra sessions, the Knights enjoyed the upper hand. In the 7v7 overtime period,
Peyton Hobson scored with about four minutes remaining to secure the OT win for Bellarmine. Then, Bellarmine notched a shootout victory as
Anna Crump,
Isabel Gladys and
Teresa Schmidt all converted for the Knights.
"Today was an opportunity for us to be challenged against a talented Louisville team and put into action everything we've been working on throughout preseason," said Bellarmine Coach
Devanny Boisvert. "I definitely think we saw glimpses of our style of play but we need to focus on our consistency. The increase in our roster size this year will give us more options in our lineup and be able to perform at a higher level. It was nice to be able to try players in different positions today so we can see what works best moving forward. I was very pleased with limiting them to only four corners, our overtime play and shootouts — I am hoping that confidence carries into next week. "
Bellarmine begins its season officially on Sunday, Aug. 29 when the Knights host Ball State at 5 p.m. The game will be played at Trager Stadium on UofL's campus.
