LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sometimes a few great minutes is all it takes.
On Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team stormed back from a late deficit with two goals in less than two minutes to capture a 2-1 victory over Eastern Illinois.
Sophomore defender
Brock Pope delivered the tying goal and junior forward
Juan Ballas tallied the game-winner for Bellarmine (3-1-1), while senior midfielder
Greg Fischer and senior defender
Nate Girao collected an assist each against EIU (0-4).
Bellarmine seemed on the verge of suffering its third straight shutout as the Knights were down 1-0 with less than eight minutes remaining after EIU had scored in the 74th minute. However, Bellarmine played determined and evened the score at 1-all in the 83rd minute.
The goal came off a set piece. Fischer perfectly curled a corner kick toward the back post, and Pope snuck under a defender and headed the ball into the net for his second goal of the season.
Bellarmine had grabbed momentum — and the Knights maintained it. Less than two minutes later, Girao sent a pass into a crowded box that found Ballas, who used the back of his foot to slot the ball inside the far post for a 2-1 lead in the 85th minute. It was Ballas' second goal of the season.
Bellarmine, and particularly sophomore forward
Chris Shust, did a good job chewing up the clock to secure the win. The Knights finished with a 16-12 advantage in shots, including 6-4 on goal, and senior goalkeeper
Connor Range registered three saves.
Bellarmine hosts Lipscomb at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday in its ASUN opener.
