LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team will conclude a four-game road stretch to start its 2021 campaign by meeting Chicago State at 3 p.m. (ET) Monday at DePaul University.
LAST TIME OUT
Bellarmine (2-1) began the season with road wins over Evansville and Purdue Fort Wayne by scores of 2-1 and 1-0 in overtime before falling 1-0 in double overtime Friday at Louisville.
Facing a relentless attack, Bellarmine held strong until the Cardinals capitalized on an opportunity midway through the second overtime, creating a chance via a takeaway that led to an open shot just inside the box that connected.
"I was happy with our effort and commitment against the University of Louisville," Knights Coach
Tim Chastonay said. "We had to defend for long stretches and the group stayed organized and made things difficult for them. It was disappointing to concede so late, but we can learn from this game."
ABOUT CHICAGO STATE
Chicago State (2-1) has a matching record as Bellarmine. The Cougars bracketed a 2-1 win over Northwestern and 1-0 overtime victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay around a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Detroit Mercy.
On Friday against visiting Wisconsin-Green Bay, Jethro Yumange assisted to Enrique Zamora for the golden goal in the 98th minute. Zamora is pacing the Cougars with two goals.
Bellarmine entered Division I last season. Chicago State is competing in its first full D1 season after playing only two games in the spring. In fact, it's the Cougars' first full season of competition since the 1980s after the sport was resurrected at the university in June 2020.
"Chicago State is a new program, so we don't know much about them," Chastonay said. "They have impressive results so far this season, so I would expect a very good team."
