Knights to close regular season with EKU road trip

2/25/2022 12:08:00 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine Knights wrap up their regular season on Saturday when they travel to Richmond for a 1 p.m. game with Eastern Kentucky University.

Bellarmine (17-12, 11-4 ASUN) comes into the game off the emotional high of a 73-70 senior night win over Lipscomb on Wednesday.  The Colonels (12-17, 4-11 ASUN) lost 81-68 on the road at Jacksonville State in their last outing.

The Knights took a 66-61 victory over EKU in the teams' first meeting at Freedom Hall on Jan. 8. A low-scoring affair by Eastern's standard (the Colonels average just a shade under 80 points a game), EKU shot just 38 percent in the contest but kept it close by forcing Bellarmine into a season-high 18 turnovers.

The Colonels are an up-tempo team that likes to create offense from defense. Eastern is closing in on the program record for steals in a season, needing just 15 more to tie the mark at 321. The Colonels have already broken the school record for 3-pointers in a season and come into Saturday's game with 338 triples (110 more than their opponents).

Four different players average double digits for EKU with Michael Moreno topping that quartet with a 12 points per game average. He's also been hot of late, netting 23 points on Wednesday night.

Bellarmine counters with a pair of the ASUN's top scorers in Dylan Penn and CJ Fleming, who average 16.5 and 15.3 points per game respectively.  Penn ranks third in the league while Fleming is fifth.

Juston Betz leads the Knights in rebounding at 6.9 per contest, which is third in the ASUN.  Bellarmine will need Betz to have another good game on the glass as the Colonels are the league's top offensive rebounding team with an average of 12.72 per game.
