LYNCHBURG, Va. — Three Bellarmine University track and field athletes set new freshman program records as the Knights squads competed Friday and Saturday in the ASUN Indoor Championship at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
Owen Bates set a new freshman record in the men's high jump,
Ryan Burchett did the same in the men's 5000 and
Chloe Freilinger was in on the act as well in the women's 400.
Bates delivered a 1.97-meter leap in the high jump to break the previous freshman mark of 1.96 set by Guy Williams at the 2018 GLVC Championships. Bates scored in the event after taking sixth.
A new freshman standard in the 5000 has been set multiple times this season. Burchett broke teammate
D.K. Schnieders' previous mark of 14:58.58 established at the Feb. 11 GVSU Big Meet by finishing in 14:47.62.
Freilinger crossed the finish line in the 400 in 58.28, topping the previous freshman record of 58.63 held by Ashley Reyna-Padilla for her performance in the 2017 GLVC Championships.

Liberty swept the men's and women's titles with 254 and 165.5 points, respectively. Kennesaw State was the runner-up on both sides, far back of the Flames with 164 in the men's competition but very close in the women's meet with 157.5.
