Softball set for two at UT-Martin after quick turnaround

3/1/2022 10:17:00 AM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.— Following just one day off after its home-opening weekend, Bellarmine softball returns to the road on Tuesday for a double-header at UT-Martin.

The first game begins at 2:00 p.m. ET with the second game scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.

Bellarmine (6-8) split its four games at home against Green Bay and Western Michigan, already evening its win total from all of last year.  The Knights have had a winning or even record in two of their three invitationals so far this season.

Tuesday marks the first midweek matchup(s) for BU this year.  UT-Martin is off to a 7-5 start this season, including two straight wins against Jackson State and Southern University on Saturday.  These two games are the Skyhawks' first at home following invitationals in Louisiana, Georgia, and most recently, Mississippi.  While the competition for UT-Martin has not been steep to this point, the Skyhawks did lose just 8-6 at the hands of Baylor – their only power-five opponent thus far.

UT-Martin is led by sophomore infielder Kaci Fuller, who is batting a team-best .500 with two home runs.  The Skyhawks have four different players with multiple home runs, totaling 13 as a team, which ranks top-40 in the country.  UT-Martin's best pitcher to this point has been Alexis Groet with a 1.83 ERA in 4 starts, including 29 strikeouts.

The Knights continue to follow Grace Werner at the plate, who tops Bellarmine with a .344 batting average and .417 on-base percentage.  Hannah Webb has a team-high 12 hits, three doubles, and six RBIs.  Freshman Megan Konermann is coming off her best career game with two hits against Western Michigan on Sunday.

Pitching, however, was the key when Bellarmine had success this past weekend.  Without top pitcher Carson Goatley, freshman Claire Lehmkuhler stepped in to pick up her team-high third win on Saturday.  Megan Murphy also captured a victory in Saturday's sweep.  In total on Saturday, the Knights allowed just seven hits over 14 innings.
