LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After four straight road games and nearly 6,000 miles over travel over two weeks, Bellarmine field hockey is ready for its home opener.
This weekend, the Knights (0-4) host James Madison (2-2) on Saturday at 5:00 p.m., followed by a quick trip to Bloomington for a matchup with Indiana (3-2) on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
Bellarmine is coming off a pair of losses in California to Cal-Berkely and UC-Davis. BU tallied a pair of goals in the most recent game against UC-Davis and showed flashes against California, but the goal now is to "show consistency across all four quarters".
Senior
Amber Hofenk Jerembo is off to a strong start, scoring two of Bellarmine's four goals this season. She also leads the team with six shots and four shots on goal. Sophomores
Marit van der Bend and
Isabel Gladys have tallied the other goals for the Knights.
Saturday marks Bellarmine's first ever meeting with James Madison. The Dukes, playing as an independent team this year, are in town for a matchup with no. 5 Louisville on Friday night – thus, they will have a feel for Trager Stadium before their matchup with BU. After handling Richmond and Bucknell in its first two games, JMU is coming off a 6-1 loss to Old Dominion and heart-breaking 3-2 loss in overtime to no. 12 Virginia. Diede Remijnse leads James Madison with four goals, while freshman Alice Roeper and graduate student Kara McClure each have five assists. Senior Eveline Zwager is another dangerous threat after scoring 16 goals last season and earning Third-Team All-American honors last season.
Indiana is Bellarmine's first power-conference opponent this season. The Hoosiers topped the Knights 3-0 in Bloomington last year when they faced off. This year, IU lost its first two games to Kent State (1-0 in OT) and no. 6 Liberty (2-0) – since then, Indiana has rattled off three consecutive wins over Stanford (3-2 in OT), California (3-2 in OT), and UC-Davis (2-0). The Hoosiers face off against Ball State at home on Friday before Sunday's meeting with the Knights. The scoring has been balanced so far for Indiana, with Anna Mozeleski, Jemima Cookson, and Jule Hufer each scoring two goals.
Saturday's game can be viewed for free on BU Knights Sports Network, while Sunday's contest is available on BTN+ (subscription required).
