LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine University track and field has competed in two indoor meets this season, and multiple program records have been broken in both of them.

The promising beginning to the 2023 campaign continued Friday and Saturday in the Cardinal Classic hosted by the University of Louisville, as the Knights set new program benchmarks in five events at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.
  • Jackson Gordon broke multiple men's records. He set a new overall and freshman mark in the 400, as his 48.46 finish topped Sean Klosterman's 49.70 overall record and Cody Oldham's 50.35 freshman mark, both from 2013, while placing eighth. Gordon also set a new freshman record in the 200 after finishing in 22.50, besting the recent 22.61 of Zac Hutslar in December's Commonwealth College Opener.
  • Sloan Cox rewrote the men's overall and freshman records in the shot put at the Commonwealth College Opener, and he raised the bar at the Cardinal Classic after tossing a 16.64, besting his 16.52, while placing seventh.
  • Paul Stamm placed fourth in the men's 3000 while setting a new overall and freshman program record after finishing in 8:19.60. Robert Sandlin had held the previous mark (8:23.91) since 2014, and teammate Nolan Hester had set the freshman mark (8:25.50) last season.
  • Alex Cole broke his own men's freshman record in the weight throw previously set at the Commonwealth College Opener (15.48) after hurling a 16.72 while placing seventh.
In addition, the men's 4x400 relay team of junior Ike Boling, Gordon, sophomore Trevor Holbrook and senior Tristan Backer came within a whisker of setting a new program record after posting a 3:18.22 (3:17.45 from 2013 is the record). It placed fifth, as did Hester in the mile, while Hutslar was sixth in the 60.

Bellarmine's women had a pair of upper-echelon performances in the 3000, as senior Anna Wells placed fifth and senior Emma Wells took sixth.

Sophomore Chloe Freilinger motored to seventh and senior Katrina Kamarute to ninth in the 400. Freilinger placed 14th of 33 in the 200.

The Knights will host the Bellarmine Open on Friday at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.
