LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team is set for a two-game road trip that encompasses its final nonconference game and its final ASUN road match.
Bellarmine (4-2-6, 2-1-2 ASUN) will play at 7:30 p.m. (ET) Tuesday at the Missouri Valley Conference's Belmont (7-4-2) before heading to Jacksonville (3-7-3, 1-1-3) for a 4 p.m. conference showdown Saturday.
Bellarmine has faced Belmont in each season of the Division-I era, with the Bruins owning a 2-0-1 series lead. Belmont senior midfielder AJ Chastonay is the son of Bellarmine Coach
Tim Chastonay. AJ, who scored two goals against Bellarmine his freshman season, is a two-time All-Conference selection and an All-Region honoree. He scored an incredible seven game-winning goals in 2021.
Belmont has scored at least two goals in each of its last five games. The Bruins have won their last three MVC matches, including Saturday's 2-1 home victory over Bowling Green. Brock Kiper leads the team with five goals and Jansen Wilson is the points leader behind four goals and five assists.
Jacksonville will host nonconference foe Thomas University on Tuesday. The Dolphins are coming off an out-of-character 5-1 loss at Queens — in ASUN play, they had preceded that with a 3-2 win over Central Arkansas, 1-1 draws against North Florida and Stetson and a 2-2 stalemate against FGCU, making the result against the Royals an anomaly.
Olivier Correa is leading Jacksonville with four goals, including one each in the last two games against Central Arkansas and Queens.
Bellarmine is coming off a big week. In its only homestand of the regular season, the Knights captured a 1-0 nonconference win over Wright State and 2-1 ASUN victory over North Florida. That win over the Ospreys was crucial. With the 3 points earned, Bellarmine vaulted into a three-way tie for second in the ASUN with FGCU and Stetson (all 8 points) with two league games left and has put itself in strong position to earn a berth in the six-team ASUN Tournament.
Jacksonville represents Bellarmine's final ASUN road trip. The Knights conclude the regular season by hosting conference counterpart Stetson on Oct. 28.
Against North Florida, senior forward
Juan Ballas scored his first goal of the season and 15th of his career. Senior midfielder
Jack Fischer's second goal of the year proved to be the game-winner. Sophomore midfielder
Ben Griffis assisted on Fischer's goal.
Griffis found the net only 4:20 into the match against Wright State. Senior defenders
Austin Yowell and
Brock Pope double assisted on the score.
