INDIANAPOLIS—The Bellarmine women's golf team came within three shots of tying the school record for low team round as the Knights shot 294 in the final round of the 54-hole Butler Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
The final round saw the Knights climb up the team scoreboard after Monday's opening rounds of 305 and 296 left them in 12th place in the 16-team tournament.
Bellarmine's
Matti Spalding provided the spark as the junior from Louisville carded her two lowest collegiate scores in the second and third rounds with an even-par 70 on Monday afternoon and a 71 today. Combined with her opening round 77, Spalding finished with an aggregate score of 218 (+8), which tied for eighth in the 100-player field.
Morehead claimed the team title, clipping Illinois-Chicago by one stroke with a 28-over par total of 868. Medalist honors went to Dasa Urbankova of UIC, who was a model of consistency in shooting 68-69-69 for a 4-under total of 206.
In addition to Spalding's solid play, Bellarmine's sophomore class of
Rozlyn Rooke and
Piper Davis put up good numbers as that duo tied for 27th at 225. Rooke, a transfer from Milton, Ontario by way of Texas State, got three shots better each round, opening with a 78 followed by 75 and 72. Davis was more consistent, posting 76 in each of the first two rounds before closing with a 73 today.
The good news for Coach
Art Henry is that after the Butler tourney, he now has six different players averaging under 80 this season: Spalding, Rooke, Davis,
Alaina Schmitt,
Presli Webb, and
Josephine Bonin. (
