Knights back home to host Central Michigan, Indiana

10/5/2023 8:17:00 AM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—After playing its last three games on the road, the Bellarmine field hockey team is back home for a pair of games, entertaining Mid-American Conference foe Central Michigan on Friday and hosting the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday.

Both games will be played at Trager Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville. Friday's contest is slated for a 1 p.m. start with Sunday's game set for first touch at 3 p.m.

Bellarmine starts the week 4-6 with a 1-2 mark in league play after falling to Miami in its only game last week.  Freshman Paige Hoyer continues to lead the Knights in scoring with seven goals and an assist for 15 points.  Senior Peyton Hobson has added five goals and three assists with classmate Anna Crump also chipping in three assists while leading the team in shots with 26.

On the other end of the field, Hannah Brown patrols the center of the back line and is a former MAC Defensive Player of the Week while Kailey Workman is posting solid numbers in the cage with 64 saves, a goals-against average of 2.19 and a save percentage of .736.  Alexa Rastigue has helped out with four defensive saves on the season.

On Friday, the Knights welcome a Chippewa team that enters just 1-9 overall and 0-3 in league play. The only common opponent of both CMU and BU this season is Appalachian State, and the Mountaineers own victories over both, defeating CMU 3-1 and Bellarmine 4-2.

The Central Michigan offense has been held in check most of the season. The Chippewas have tallied just eight goals on the season and suffered through six straight shutouts before breaking through for one goal in each of their last two games.  The lone victory for CMU came in their season opener, defeating Colgate 3-2.

Zoey Emrick and Amelia Lane have two goals apiece to lead the Chippewas in scoring. On defense, Maja Halasz and Coletta Beeler have split the goalkeeping duties with Halasz getting the majority of the playing time and leads the team in saves with 52.

Indiana comes into Sunday's game with a 4-7 record, having played a schedule that has featured five top 20 teams. Bellarmine and IU have two common opponents: Miami and Saint Francis.  Both of the opponents were wins for the Hoosiers while the Knights took "L"s against both.

Sarah Charley paces the Hoosiers' offense, leading the team in goals (4), assists (3) and shots (20). The Indiana defensive unit is anchored by goalies Shannon McNally and Arabella Loveridge, who have shared time in the cage almost equally this season.  McNally has earned most of the goalie decisions, going 4-4 with a goals-against average of 2.76 and 24 saves in just under 359 minutes of action. Loveridge has 30 saves and a GAA of 3.14 in just under 315 minutes.
