LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team will continue ASUN road action when the Knights face FGCU at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday at Pickering Field.
It's been a highly competitive series, as Bellarmine (2-2-5, 1-1-1 ASUN) and FGCU (3-2-3, 2-0-1) are tied at 2-all in the Division-I era. The Eagles won the first two meetings, but the Knights captured the last two. Ironically, the wins for each came by the same two scores, 2-1 and 1-0.
With four conference games remaining and six spots available in the ASUN Tournament, FGCU is second in the conference with seven points behind leader Lipscomb (nine). Bellarmine is in a three-way tie for third with Central Arkansas and Stetson with four points each.
FGCU is the last opponent in a three-game road stretch for Bellarmine. The Eagles are unbeaten in ASUN play after following a 2-2 draw at Jacksonville with a 4-0 home win over Stetson and a 2-1 road victory at North Florida.
FGCU has scored at least two goals in four consecutive games. Luis Lugo leads the Eagles with three goals, including a pair against Jacksonville. FGCU's 1.25 goals-against average ranks third in the conference, with the Knights (1.22) just ahead.
In its last two ASUN games, Bellarmine experienced the extremes of the emotional gauntlet, essentially losing and then winning on the soccer equivalent of buzzer beaters. At home on Sept. 23 against reigning ASUN champion Lipscomb, the Knights held a 2-0 lead with less than 15 minutes to play only to see the Bisons score three straight goals, with the game-winner coming inside the last 10 seconds. Exactly one week later at Queens, however, the tables turned for BU, as the Knights scored with 4 seconds left in a 1-0 win over the Royals.
Matthew Brozovich is the reigning ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week and a two-time honoree this season. The senior goalkeeper recorded his third shutout of the year in the victory over Queens.
Chris Shust was responsible for the game-winning goal against the Royals. The junior forward has two goals this season, both in the last two games.
Senior defender
Brock Pope assisted on Shust's goal against Queens and leads the team in points with seven. Senior defender
Austin Yowell was on the front end of a double assist on Shust's goal and is the team leader in minutes played among non-goalkeepers.
