ATLANTA — In a landmark awards haul for the program, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team garnered a pair of 2023 Atlantic Sun Conference superlative honors, racked up four All-ASUN plaudits and added an ASUN All-Freshman Team accolade.
Senior
Matthew Brozovich was distinguished as the ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year while senior
Brock Pope was recognized as the ASUN Defensive Player of the Year. Both earned unanimous first-team All-ASUN laurels, and junior midfielder
Brendan Schoemehl joined them on the first team. Senior defender
Austin Yowell reaped second-team All-ASUN notice, and defender
Jeffrey Cox was acknowledged on the ASUN All-Freshman Team.
The ASUN Goalkeeper and Defensive Player of the Year citations were the first in program history. Overall, Bellarmine has wrangled three ASUN superlative awards, as
Tim Chastonay was named ASUN Coach of the Year in the spring of 2021.
Brozovich validated his selection as the 2023 ASUN Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year. The native of St. Louis earned the postseason version of the marquee award after tying for first in the conference in shutouts (three) while ranking second in goals-against average (1.32) and tying for second in save percentage (.727). He amassed five saves or more on six occasions.
Pope was a unanimous pick for the 2023 Preseason All-ASUN Team and, like Brozovich, more than backed up the hype. Not only did he help spearhead the league's stingiest defense, the native of Corinth, Texas, was a virtuoso in goal generating from a backline post. An outside back, Pope supplied a team-high 10 points while tying for third in the ASUN in assists (six) and his two goals came against league foes Central Arkansas and Lipscomb.
Defenders making significant contributions offensively in addition to their primary duties was a hallmark of Bellarmine's success and run to the ASUN Tournament's two-seed. Along with Pope, Schoemehl, a holding midfielder, netted a team-high four goals, including scores in conference games against FGCU and Jacksonville, while also leading the Knights in shots (22) and shots on goal (10).
Yowell, a transfer from Belmont who led the team in minutes and played the full game in all but two matches, was on Pope's opposite flank, and his booming left foot produced three assists, including helpers in ASUN contests against Queens and Jacksonville.
Cox seamlessly integrated himself into a veteran defense that also included senior
Jackson Kirn. A center back, Cox started 12 games and logged 1,126 minutes. His tying goal with a little over one minute left capped a rally to a 2-2 draw at Purdue Fort Wayne.
With the four All-Conference selections, Bellarmine raised its tally to 12 awards in four seasons in the ASUN. Behind Cox, the Knights have now had four ASUN All-Freshman honorees.
