SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.—Senior
Alaina Schmitt led the Bellarmine women's golf team with a top 10 finish at Tennessee Tech's Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate played Sunday through Tuesday at Sevierville Country Club's Highlands Course.
Schmitt carded three consistent rounds (74-76-76) in finishing tied for 8th in the field of 85 players. As a team, Bellarmine was 10th in the field of 15 teams.
Fellow ASUN Conference member Austin Peay held off a late charge from the University of Findlay to claim the team title by three strokes with final aggregate score of 894 at the par-71, 5,803-yard layout.
Findlay's Gabby Woods took medalist honors by completing a strong comeback. After an opening 78, she fired rounds of 66 and 70 to clip North Alabama's Jacqueline Klemm by one shot.
Bellarmine's Elizbeth Duncan closed with a 77 to finish second on the team at 242, and
Matti Spalding made a strong bounce back in the final round to match her opening round 78 to finish at 248.
Jessica Stephens was another shot back at 249, and
Piper Davis rounded out the Bellarmine contingent at 258.
The Knights return to action on Monday, when they'll play close to home at the Nevel Meade Collegiate. The two-day event is hosted by Cleveland State University, but it is contested at Nevel Meade Golf Course which is less than 20 miles from campus in Prospect, Kentucky.
