PROSPECT, Ky.—The Bellarmine women's golf team battled the elements of cool temperatures and windy conditions as the Knights tied for seventh in the 13-team Nevel Meade Collegiate hosted by Cleveland State University at the nearby Nevel Meade Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday.
Senior
Alaina Schmitt led the way for the Knights, finishing tied for fifth among 78 competitors. She fired rounds of 74 and 75 in the 36-hole event.
Originally slated for a 54-hole tournament, the event was trimmed back to 36 holes because cold temperatures and frost delayed the start of play on both Monday and Tuesday.
In the team competition, Central Michigan won the title behind the strong play of medalist Casilda Allendesalazar, who paced the field with rounds of 70 and 74 to finish at even par. The Chippewas opened with the only sub-300 round of the tourney, shooting 297 on Monday, and closed with a 305 today to best runner-up Evansville by seven shots.
Other Bellarmine players finishing in the top half of the field were
Elizabeth Duncan, who placed in a tie for 26th, and
Piper Davis, who closed with a 77 and tied for 39th.
The Knights are counting on much warmer weather in their next outing, which takes place in the "Sunshine State" on March 27 and 28. Bellarmine will play in the Babs Steffans Invitational, which is hosted by Stetson University and being played at the DeBary (FL) Country Club.
