DeBARY, Fla.—The Bellarmine women's golf team got better with every round, but an uncharacteristic opening round 337 left the Knights too much ground to make up as they finished 12th in the 13-team field at the Babs Steffens Invitational hosted by Stetson University at the DeBary Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
On Monday afternoon, Bellarmine trimmed 16 shots off their morning round then closed with a 312 on Tuesday to finish the 54-hole event with aggregate score of 970.
Florida International closed with a red-hot 284 (-4) to claim the team title while also taking home the medalist trophy. FIU's Riley Hamilton opened with a 78, but shot 67 and 71 to hold off teammate Karissa Kilby by two shots to win the individual crown.
Bellarmine was paced by
Alaina Schmitt and
Jessica Stephens, who each posted aggregate scores of 240. However, the Bellarmine duo took different routes to arrive at the same score. Stephens opened with an 83 then took off three shots per round, closing with a 77. Schmitt, on the other hand, carded an 89 on Monday morning but bounced back with rounds of 77 and 74.
The Knights return to Kentucky for their next action, which comes Monday and Tuesday at Eastern Kentucky's Colonel Classic. The 54-hole event will be held at the University Club at Arlington.
