RICHMOND, Ky.—The Bellarmine University men's golf team exploded out of the gates this season, breaking the school record for low team round, not once, but twice in posting a third place finish at the Colonel Shootout hosted by Eastern Kentucky at the University Club of Arlington on Thursday and Friday.
The Knights opened the season by eclipsing the old school record for low team round (280) by posting a score of 277, which was anchored by a 5-under par 65 by
Patrick Brooks, who was making his first appearance as a Knight since transferring from Belmont. Bellarmine then closed the tournament on Friday by breaking the record again by firing a team score of 275, led by
Frankie Morgan's 65.
In Friday afternoon's second round, Bellarmine struggled to a 293, but even with the second round anomaly, the Knights finished third in the 12-team field, trailing Belmont by eight shots and runner-up EKU by just one stroke.
Brooks finished tied for third in the field of 90 players with a 3-under total after rounds of 65, 72 and 70. Freshman
August Johnson also had a very good start to his Bellarmine career, posting a top-20 finish, tying for 18
th after an aggregate score of 213 (70, 73, 70).
