LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine field hockey team makes its Mid-American Conference debut and sees its seven-game, season-opening homestand come to an end as the Knights welcome Appalachian State to Trager Stadium for a 3 p.m. game on Friday.
Bellarmine comes into the contest on a high note after finishing off a double overtime, come-from-behind victory over Davidson on Sunday. In the 3-2 victory, Bellarmine got offensive production from various sources with
Alicia Hudson recording the game-winning goal off a feed from
Anna Crump. Notching two goals was freshman
Paige Hoyer, who converted passes from
Sophie Stoll and
Peyton Hobson for the scores.
The Knights enter 2-4 on the season, playing a competitive schedule will six games decided by two or fewer goals.
Hoyer has emerged as the Bellarmine offensive leader. The freshman out of North Oldham High School has netted four goals and an assist through her first six games. Crump and Hudson are tied for second on the team in points with four.
On defense, Bellarmine's
Kailey Workman has posted solid numbers in working all 377 minutes in goal. The sophomore from Milton, Ontario has piled up 45 saves and a 78.9 save percentage this season.
Alexa Rastigue also is working her way up the Bellarmine career list for defensive saves. With two on the season, she currently ranks third in program history with 11.
Appalachian State enters Friday's contest with a mark of 4-2 after dropping its last contest 0-3 to the 17
th-ranked Demon Deacons of Wake Forest. The Mountaineers and Bellarmine have two common opponents so far this season with both having played Towson and Davidson. While the Knights split decisions, ASU swept their matchups with the Tigers and Wildcats.
Charlotte Bosma and Florine Koopman are the leading Mountaineer scorers with each scoring two goals and handing out two assists on the year. Defensively for App State, Louisville native Addie Clark has played in cage four times, with 19 saves on the season, but Claire Grenis has been in goal the last two games, netting nine saves in those contests.
