KEWADIN, Mich..—The Bellarmine women's golf team opened its 2023-24 season on Sunday and Monday at Central Michigan's A-Ga-Ming Invitational, and if the early results are true a indicator, it appears the Knights could be in for a record-breaking season. In fact, the records have already begun falling.
Graduate Student
Alaina Schmitt fired a closing round 67 (-5) to break the Bellarmine record for individual low round (both aggregate score and relation to par). The outstanding finish also elevated her to a runner-up finish in the event at 215 (-1). Schmitt was one of only two players to finish the 54-hole event under par with Oakland's Bridget Boczar capturing medalist honors with a tournament record 206 total (65-74-67).
Schmitt wasn't the only Knight putting up good numbers. The team as whole also made program history. The Knights' second round team score of 299 marked the first time a Bellarmine women's team has shot under 300 while playing a par 72 course. Sandwiched around the 299 were rounds of 306 and 301 as Bellarmine finished in fourth place in the 13-team field.
Newcomers
Rozlyn Rooke and
Presli Webb made an immediate impact by breaking 80 in every round. Rooke, a sophomore transfer from Texas State, finished in a tie for 26th after rounds of 79-73-76. Webb, a freshman from Conway, Arkansas, was four shots back and tied for 38th.
Just one shot back was
Josephine Bonin, who gutted out rounds of 74, 80, and 79 after suffering a sprained ankle on her very first hole of the tournament. Rounding out the Bellarmine top five was
Jessica Stephens, whose second round 78 helped the Knights break 300.
