Men's soccer to square off with FGCU in ASUN Championship quarterfinals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The sixth-seeded Bellarmine University men's soccer team will square off with third-seeded FGCU in the ASUN Championship quarterfinals at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday at host North Florida's Hodges Stadium.

Bellarmine (5-6-4) and FGCU (4-9-2) are no strangers to meeting in the postseason. This will mark the third time in five seasons in which they've met in the conference tournament. They both captured a 2-1 win, the Eagles doing so in spring 2021 (the fall 2020 season was delayed due to the pandemic) and the Knights doing so in fall 2021.

Bellarmine and FGCU met in the regular season Oct. 29 at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. The Knights notched a 2-0 win over the Eagles, netting goals in the 15th and 64th minutes. It was the second of back-to-back ASUN wins for BU — the other was 2-1 over Jacksonville — and, along with a 1-1 draw at Stetson in the regular-season finale, was part of a late-season surge that propelled the Knights to their fifth straight appearance in the ASUN Championship.

FGCU notched wins over Jacksonville (1-0), Lipscomb (2-0) and Central Arkansas (2-1) in ASUN play. Midfielder Alon Drey earned first-team All-ASUN honors, forward Shoki Yoshida and defender Lucas Windschauer were named to the second team, and Alvarez Beltran and Jose Escobar were picked for the ASUN All-Freshman Team. Yoshida is the team leader in goals with four.

Senior defender Austin Yowell garnered first-team All-ASUN laurels for Bellarmine. It was his clutch goal in the 89th minute of the 1-1 stalemate with Stetson that was responsible for Bellarmine getting the clinching point sending them to the conference tournament.

Midfielder Nick Harshaw was an ASUN All-Freshman Team recipient. He is the team leader in points (nine) and goals (four), scoring against Jacksonville and FGCU with an additional assist in the latter.

Bellarmine finished the regular season ranked second in the ASUN in scoring defense (1.20 GAA). The Knights conceded only two goals in their last three games, another key factor in their inspired run to achieve postseason participation.
