FISHERS, In. – The Bellarmine University swim teams opened the season Sunday in the Butler Double Dual Louis at Fishers High School in Indiana.
Bellarmine, Butler, Xavier, Saint Louis and Evansville competed on the women's side while the same tams with the exception of Butler met on the men's side.
Freshman
Micaela Godfrey led the way for the Knights in her first collegiate event, winning both the women's 400 IM (4:36.77) and the 200 backstroke (2:05.33). Godfrey was also a member of the women's 400 medley relay, along with senior
Alexandra Pierce and fellow freshmen
Annie Leibold and
Lily Epley, that placed third in the event.
Epley also found individual success in the pool, taking second in the women's 50 free (24.97) and third in the 100 free (54.44) in her collegiate debut. Pierce finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.73) and fifth in the 400 IM (4:43.36).
Sophomore
Coral Brogan (6
th, 11:17.89) and senior
Johnnise Garcia (7
th, 11:19.01) both finished in the top half of the 1000 freestyle.
Three Knights finished in the top half of the women's 200 freestyle in sophomore
Lily Wolfe (6
th, 1:59.51), freshman
Clara McIntyre (9
th, 2:00.33) and Leibold (11
th, 2:02.22). McIntyre also took sixth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:26.00.
Freshmen
Ava Jones and
Kate Ryan earned top half finishes in two events while finishing within milliseconds of each other in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestlye. In the 50 free, Jones placed 11
th with a time of 25.70 while Ryan took 12
th with a time of 25.73. In the 100 free, Jones placed 7
th (55.52) with Ryan taking 8
th (55.70).
On the men's side, junior
Cason Henderson and sophomore
Evan Dickson led the way, each with a runner-up finish. Henderson was the runner-up in the 200 butterfly (1:56.61) while also seeing success in the 400 IM, taking third with a time of 4:16.06. Dickson was the runner-up in 200 freestyle (1:43.32).
Seniors
John Paul Metzner and
Brandon Thomas also saw success in the opener. Metzner took third both the 50 (21.81) and 100 freestlye (47.79) while Thomas finished fourth in both the 400 IM (4:18.79) and the 200 breaststroke (2:12.95).
Sophomore
Britton Pianki, a transfer from Cincinnati, finished in the top half of the 100 freestyle (48.86) in her first competition as a Knight.
Grad student
Andrew Nguyen and sophomore
Colin Jackson, along with Metzner and Dickson, finished fourth in the men's 400 medley relay with a time of 3:29.09.
