LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team is set to embark on a four-game Atlantic Sun Conference road swing, with this week comprising half the stretch as the Knights will face West Georgia at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday before looping back for an in-state clash with Eastern Kentucky at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Bellarmine (11-6, 2-2 ASUN) will follow its matchups with the Wolves (7-8, 1-3) and Colonels (12-5, 2-2) with a trip to the Sunshine State for contests with conference leader FGCU and Stetson, which were the top two seeds in last season's ASUN Tournament. The four-game road segment is the Knights' longest of the year, conference or otherwise.
Bellarmine has tied a Division I-era program record with four road wins. The Knights are 1-0 in such games in ASUN play, defeating Queens 71-67 in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Jan. 8.
ABOUT WEST GEORGIA
Like Bellarmine, West Georgia is a recent transplant from D2. The Wolves are in their first season in the NCAA's highest level while the Knights are in their fifth. The programs are meeting for the first time. The Knights represent UWG's third of four straight home games. The Wolves almost certainly opened eyes around the league last week when they defeated Eastern Kentucky 71-64 for their first-ever ASUN win and followed with another impressive performance by taking Lipscomb to overtime before falling 83-73. UWG's work on the glass and its passing have stood out, as the Wolves rank second in the conference in rebounding margin (+5.0) and assists (15.1), the latter in which they boast three players in the individual top 10. Guard Zuriyah Davis is tied for sixth in the league in scoring (13.5), forward Destiny Jones is fourth in rebounding (7.6, along with averaging 11.3 points) and guard Mykah Anderson is second in steals (2.1).
ABOUT EASTERN KENTUCKY
Eastern Kentucky will precede its showdown with Bellarmine by meeting Austin Peay for the second time already this season, as the Colonels notched a 72-58 road victory over the Governors to open league play. EKU has had mixed results thus far in conference action, but the Colonels are coming off a dominant 94-58 home victory over North Alabama. EKU is in the top five in most ASUN statistical categories, among them ranking first in assists (16.3), third in both scoring offense (73.4) and scoring defense (63.5) and fourth in rebounding margin (+3.5). Perennial All-ASUN point guard Alice Recanati is the conference leader in assists (4.8) while ranking 13th in scoring (12.0). Guard Kaitlyn Costner ranks eighth in the league in scoring (13.4), forward Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor is second in rebounding (7.9) and guard Liz Freihofer is second in total 3-pointers made (37). McGinnis-Taylor and Freihofer are both averaging 10.8 points. Freihofer is a five-time ASUN Freshman of the Week.
