LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine men's basketball team will look to build upon their first win of the season Saturday afternoon inside Knights Hall. Coming off head coach
Doug Davenport's first career victory, the Knights are set to host Wofford at 2 p.m. ET.
Saturday's game is the first of two Bellarmine games arranged via the ASUN-SoCon scheduling alliance. The Knights also visit The Citadel on November 24.
About Wofford
Wofford (1-2) visits the Highlands coming off a loss at No. 22/25 Auburn on Tuesday by a 93-62 final at Neville Arena. The Terriers got double-digit scoring efforts from Chace Watley (11 points) and Kahmare Holmes (10 points), but were outshot 50.7 percent to 38.7 percent and outrebounded 48-27 by the Tigers. Wofford's only win in their first three games was a 86-76 win over Milwaukee at home in Spartanburg, S.C. They also suffered a 70-46 loss at George Mason in their season opener.
Holmes, a sophomore guard, leads Wofford averaging 12.7 points, though he has connected on just 2-of-14 threes (.143) after shooting just .222 from beyond the arc last season. Despite being much more effective inside the arc (11-for-20), his 14 three-point attempts are tied for second-most on the team. He dropped in 24 points, the most by a Terrier this season, in their win over Milwaukee. The Terriers' leading outside threat is junior Nils Machowski, a transfer guard from Central Florida, at .370 (5-for-14). Freshman forward Brian Sumpter is second in the SoCon averaging 2.0 blocks to go along with 10.0 points and sophomore guard Luke Flynn is 12th averaging 6.3 rebounds.
Overall in the early going of the season, Wofford ranks 334th out of 359 Division I teams in field goal percentage (.383), 296th in field goal percentage defense (.471), 284th in rebound margin and 271st in assists per game. Where they do excel is blocking shots with 4.7 per game, good for 87th nationally. Six other Terriers besides Sumpter have recorded a block this season.
The Terriers are coming off their sixth-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, all coming since 2010 via automatic bids by winning the SoCon Tournament. They will be the second opponent ever to make the tournament the previous season to be hosted by Bellarmine, and the first in Knights Hall. BU hosted Murray State at Freedom Hall in 2022-23 when they were coming off a round of 32 appearance. As a No. 15 seed last year, Wofford was bounced by No. 2 seed
Coaching the Terriers is Kevin Giltner, who was named head coach less than two months ago following the controversial dismissal of head coach and former Kentucky walk-on Dwight Perry. Giltner was previously an assistant at Virginia Tech.
Davenport on the Terriers
"The ASUN/SoCon Challenge gives us a great opportunity prior to conference play to compete against a like-level opponent. Wofford is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance and we can't wait to test ourselves against a program of their stature."
