Swimming finishes fall with four school records at A3 Performance Invitational

CARBONDALE, Il. – The Bellarmine University swim teams completed their fall competition last weekend, turning in a third-place finish on both the men's and women's side of the A3 Performance Invitational hosted by Southern Illinois.

The Knights set multiple school records en route to third place finishes with the women scoring 465 points and the men scoring 461 points.

Freshman Ahmet Efe Inceoglu led all Knights swimmers with the lone Bellarmine gold medal, winning the 200 200 freestyle in a school record 1:36.58. Inceoglu also placed fourth in the 50 freestyle (20.65) where he set a school record in the preliminary race with a 20.57. He completed the trifecta with a school record in the 100 freestyle, swimming a 44.00 as the leadoff man for the 400-freestyle relay team. Joining him in the relay effort was fellow freshman Yael Bojalil and junior Colin Jackson and Evan Dickson as they combined for a second-place finish in a school record 3:01.08.

Senior Sam Jones recorded the second-best finish for the men, coming in third in the 1650 free with a time of 15:54.45. He also placed sixth in the 400 IM (4:04.40) and seventh in the 500 free (4:33.43).

Bojalil turned in two fifth place finishes to help score team points for Bellarmine, turning in a 4:34.15 500 freestyle and a 1:40.75 200 freestyle. Jackson also registered a fifth-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.76 as did senior Cason Henderson in the 200 butterfly (1:52.71). Dickson contributed a sixth-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:40.80. Jackson (100 back, 50.81), Henderson (400 IM, 4:08.03) and freshman Carter Souliere (200 IM, 1:54.15) all tallied a seventh-place finish in their respective events while Souliere (100 back, 51.40) and sophomore David Diercks (200 back, 1:54.20) added eighth-place finishes.

In the relays, the men placed second in the 200 medley and third in the 200 free and 400 medley.
For the women, sophomore Micaela Godfrey led the way with a high of third place in the 400 IM (4:26.88). She also came in fourth in the 200 back (2:03.09) and seventh in the 200 IM (2:06.94). Freshman Kaja Vaadal placed fourth in the 1650 free (17:44.40) while senior Erin Dall'Agnol did so in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.78). Dall'Agnol also added a fifth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.81) as did junior Charlotte Tully in the 200 butterfly (2:11.40).

The Knights' women's team also added a host of sixth, seventh and eighth place finishes thanks to junior Lily Wolfe (6th, 1650 free, 17:52.59; 7th, 500 free, 5:11.23; 8th, 200 butterfly, 2:16.05), sophomore Annie Leibold (6th, 200 butterfly, 2:11.88; 8th, 100 butterfly, 58.40), sophomore Kate Ryan (7th, 200 free, 1:56.63) and sophomore Lizzy Sosa (8th, 100 back, 59.10).

In the relays, the women set a school record time of 1:36.13 for a bronze medal in the 200-freestyle relay thanks to sophomores Ava Jones and Lily Epley, Sosa and Dall'Agnol. They also placed second the 400 free relay, third in the 400-medley relay and 800 free relay and fourth in the 200-medley relay.

Up next, Bellarmine will take the remainder of the fall semester off before picking back up in the spring with a dual at Xavier on January 17.
