LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The ASUN Tournament-bound Bellarmine University women's basketball team is headed back to the Sunshine State this week for a pair of games.
Bellarmine (15-12, 6-8 ASUN) will face Jacksonville (13-13, 7-7) at 5:30 p.m. (ET) Thursday before a 2 p.m. clash Saturday at North Florida (4-23, 0-14). The contest with the Dolphins was moved up an hour at Jacksonville's request. It's the Knights' second meeting this season with both squads.
While the league office has made no formal announcement due to the continued existence of potential tiebreaking scenarios, the conference did confirm in a correspondence with Bellarmine that the Knights have indeed clinched a berth in the 10-team ASUN Tournament.
FIRST GAME VS. JACKSONVILLE
Bellarmine suffered a 91-83 home loss to Jacksonville on Feb. 1. The Knights were within five with 7:12 left in the fourth, but the Dolphins pulled away with a 13-3 run. Bellarmine foul trouble was a significant factor, but Jacksonville also shot 47.1 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Knights 56-37. Senior guard
Hope Sivori tied the BU program record with eight 3-pointers made and finished with a game-high 25 points. Junior guard
Erin Toller's 19 points are tied for her season high, and senior forward
Skylar Treadwell delivered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Edyn Battle paced Jacksonville with 23 points.
JACKSONVILLE OVERALL
Jacksonville has locked up a bid in the ASUN Tournament. The Dolphins have won six of their last nine conference games, including Saturday's 63-52 home victory over North Florida. Jacksonville is in the midst of five home contests over a six-game stretch — the Dolphins are 9-2 this season in Swisher Gymnasium. Battle remains the ASUN leader in scoring (20.9). She missed some time in conference play due to injury but amassed 21 points or more in seven of her 10 league outings. Saniyah Craig is the ASUN's leading rebounder (11.1) while averaging a double-double (also 10.9 points per game). She's recorded 15 rebounds or more in seven conference games.
FIRST GAME VS. NORTH FLORIDA
Bellarmine captured an 80-69 home win over North Florida on Jan. 30. The Ospreys were within two with less than five minutes remaining, but the Knights proceeded to deliver a game-sealing 9-0 run. Sivori led five BU players in double figures with 18 points while the Knights had a plus-12 rebounding advantage. North Florida sank 12 3-pointers, four of which came from Jamisyn Stinson, who led the Ospreys with 14 points.
NORTH FLORIDA OVERALL
North Florida is still seeking its first ASUN win. The Ospreys will get their first chance this week Thursday when they host Eastern Kentucky. UNF has had some close calls in conference play. Central Arkansas' only league loss remains to Bellarmine, and the Ospreys were within five of the Sugar Bears with seven minutes left in their most recent home game. Jazmine Spencer is the team's leading scorer (11.0).
LAST WEEK
Bellarmine split its two games, posting a critical 86-79 overtime win at Lipscomb before falling 79-73 at home to Eastern Kentucky. Those results were reflective of the season, as the Knights are 4-2 on the road in ASUN play but 2-6 at home. Sivori poured in a game-high 27 points against Lipscomb, with her seven 3-pointers made propelling her to the single-season program record. Treadwell (19 points, 15 rebounds) and junior guard
Miyah Brown (16 points, 13 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles for the Knights, who outscored the Bisons 16-9 in overtime. Playing on one day's rest compared to the two of EKU, BU never seemed to get in a groove against the Colonels, but the Knights still trailed by only two entering the fourth. EKU took control by opening the last period on a 12-2 run and holding off a BU comeback attempt in the waning minutes.
SIVORI STILL AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS
As of Tuesday, Sivori ranked seventh in the country in 3-pointers made with 78. She also ranked 18th in the country in FT percentage (89.5) while her 58 steals were only two away from tying the contingent that is tied for 46th in the nation.
