LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Monique Reid has been promoted from an assistant coach to the seventh head coach in the history of the Bellarmine University women's basketball program, director of athletics
Scott Wiegandt announced Friday.
Reid's appointment as the new program leader of Bellarmine comes after the recent retirement of her predecessor,
Chancellor Dugan, a university cornerstone who guided the Knights for the last 13 of her 34 overall seasons as a head coach and 43 total in coaching.
A University of Louisville Athletics Hall of Famer, Reid was an assistant coach at Bellarmine the last two seasons. She helped the Knights set the program's benchmark for success in the NCAA's highest level in 2024-25, as BU set new D1-era records for total wins (18), ASUN wins (eight), road wins (nine) and winning streak (six) while also winning its first-ever ASUN Tournament game.
"I'm excited about Monique and her transition within our women's basketball program," Wiegandt said. "Monique has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the game of basketball, and that has fully extended into her devotion to Bellarmine Basketball. Coach Reid upholds the standards and values of the department and university. She received great support from members of our community that speak to the high expectations of this hire."
Reid joined Dugan's staff as an assistant prior to the 2023-24 season after enjoying an extensive professional playing career overseas. A precursor to this past season's unprecedented D1-era success, Bellarmine's late run included a sweep of Lipscomb and Austin Peay in the final week of the regular season en route to the first of two straight ASUN Tournament bids.
Bellarmine has garnered four All-ASUN accolades, four Academic All-ASUN Team laurels and 11 ASUN weekly awards (Player/Newcomer/Freshman of the Week) during Reid's two seasons.
"I am truly honored to be named the Head Coach of Bellarmine University," Reid said. "First off, I want to thank God because without Him none of this would be possible. I love my team, the community/fans and this program. Thank you to Scott and (Bellarmine President) Dr. (Susan M.) Donovan for trusting me to lead this program. I have the utmost respect for the coaches and players before me that laid the foundation and will continue to build that pushing us to new heights. With that being said, I'm eager and confident in my ability to lead this team. The standard is the standard. This is the New BU."
Reid retired as a professional player in June of 2023 after a distinguished decade of playing abroad in which the 6-foot-1 small forward captured numerous MVP awards, scoring titles and championships. Her international stops included Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Chile, Puerto Rico, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
Over a decade, the Louisville native was named MVP four times and earned 10 total championships while frequently winning the scoring title, including in her last full season, which came in Turkey when she averaged 30.9 points per game.
Reid was one of the most prolific players in University of Louisville history and was inducted into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023. When she was hired as an assistant at Bellarmine, she still ranked in the program's all-time top 10 in career points (1,725), rebounds (802), field goals made (643) and free throws made (430) in a tenure that spanned from 2008-13.
Reid was named first-team All-Big East as a sophomore and junior and helped lead the Cardinals to the Final Four — and NCAA Tournament runner-up finishes — in 2009 and 2013. As a sophomore, she was also recognized as the Big East Most Improved Player of the Year.
Reid played high school basketball at Fern Creek in Louisville where, over four seasons, she piled up 2,666 career points and 1,558 career rebounds while averaging 25.4 points per game. She was named a Courier Journal first-team All-State selection and the Region 7 Player of the Year her junior and senior seasons, averaging 31.6 points, 19.2 rebounds and 5.7 assists in the latter while being chosen to play for the Kentucky All-Star team.
