Lane tops 800m, Brady sets new freshman mark at Bellarmine Open

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Junior Aubrey Lane placed first in the women's 800m while Caysie Brady set a new women's freshman program record in the weight throw as Knights track and field hosted the Bellarmine Open on Friday at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.

Brady's launch of 14.92m in the weight throw topped the previous freshman program record of 14.76m set by Haden Wolfe at the 2024 GVSU Big Meet. Wolfe, now a junior, placed sixth in the event (15.10) while Brady was eighth.

Lane took top honors in the 800m among a field of 23 after posting a 2:16.61. Bellarmine had two runner-up finishes on the men's side, with senior Jackson Gordon placing second in the 400m (48.18) and freshman Landen Fernandez taking silver in the 800m (1:58.39).

Freshman Buzz Christensen directly followed Fernandez in third in the 800m (1:58.70) and sophomore Grant King joined Gordon in the top quarter of the 800m in seventh (49.17). Senior Zac Hutslar placed fourth in the long jump (6.79m), and freshman Taevion Sweeney finished sixth in the 60m hurdles (8.65).

Senior Sierra Oesterling placed fifth in the women's 5000m (10:27.61), freshman Katie Alvis was sixth in the 400m (59.34) and junior Amelia Svidal took sixth in the long jump (5.48m).

Additional upper-half finishes for Bellarmine's women were supplied by Wolfe (eighth, 11.01m) and senior Avery Koch (11th, 10.18m) in the shot put, junior Annie Somwe in the 200m (10th, 26.80) and sophomore Katie Schweigardt in the mile (15th, 5:47.84).

Junior Will Bracher placed fifth (16.73m) and freshman Martin Garcia was 15th (12.21m) in the men's weight throw, and the Knights had four additional throwers place in the top half of the shot put in Bracher (sixth, 14.66m), freshman Dylan Forster (eighth, 13.92m), sophomore Enrico Busato (ninth, 13.92m) and Garcia (12th, 12.98m).

Senior Zander Hooten placed in the upper half of the 60m (13th, 7.10) and the 200m (14th, 22.57), with Sweeney right behind him in the latter (15th, 22.60), as did sophomore Malcolm Robertson in the 3000m (17th, 8:58.95).

The Knights will host the PNC Bank Bellarmine Classic on Friday at the Norton SLC.
