LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine University soccer alumnus Callum Southern has joined the Knights women's soccer staff as an assistant, head coach
Steve Bornhoffer announced Wednesday.
Southern was a standout midfielder for the Bellarmine men's soccer program from 2014-17. He was a four-year starter who appeared in 67 games and racked up 17 goals for the Knights. The native of Stoke-On-Trent, England, was a second-team All-GLVC selection as a senior behind an eight-goal campaign and garnered two Academic All-GLVC citations.
Southern's introduction to coaching also came at Bellarmine, where he was a graduate assistant under Tim Chastonay during the watershed 2019 men's season. That year, the Knights went undefeated in the regular season, extended an unbeaten streak that began the previous season to 30 games, won the GLVC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA II Sweet 16.
"It is special to come back to Bellarmine in this role," Southern said. "Bellarmine had a huge impact on me as a student-athlete, and I am excited to now give back by supporting the development and college experience of these young women on and off the field."
Southern was the head coach of the St. Xavier High School boys' freshman team in Louisville from 2022-25 while also being a youth head coach with Louisville City FC Academy during that time.
"I'm very excited to welcome Callum to our staff," Bornhoffer said. "He's returning to Bellarmine where he was a standout student-athlete and assistant coach. Callum is going to bring loyalty, great soccer knowledge and a passion for coaching and developing student-athletes. I look forward to collaborating with him as we continue to build on a strong 2025 season."
That 2025 campaign included D1-era program records of 11 overall wins, seven road wins and a nine-game unbeaten streak along with a 3-1 triumph over Graphite Division one-seed FGCU in the ASUN Tournament quarterfinals.
Southern earned a bachelor's degree in sports administration and a master's degree in digital media from Bellarmine.
"Working alongside Coach Bornhoffer is something I am really looking forward to," Southern said. "His background at the collegiate level speaks for itself, and I am eager to learn from him while doing my part to support the program every day.
"As I have continued to grow in my coaching career, Bellarmine has always been on my radar as a place I hoped to return to. I am excited that the opportunity to come back is here and to once again be part of a community that means so much to me."
