LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine University senior Brady Niemeyer was named the Midwest Sprint Football League Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. 

A defensive end, Niemeyer turned in a strong performance in Bellarmine's season opener at Quincy on Saturday. The Covington, Kentucky, native led the Knights with nine tackles while adding 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. 

Niemeyer helped anchor a Bellarmine defense that forced two turnovers and held Quincy to 5-of-12 on third-down conversions and 0-of-2 on fourth down. The Knights also held the Hawks scoreless in the third quarter as Bellarmine rallied from a 21-7 halftime deficit to tie the game at 21-21 in the fourth. 

The nine tackles marked a team high for the Knights, while his 2.5 tackles for loss also led Bellarmine. His sack was for a loss of 13 yards and was the lone sack of the game for either team. 

The award marks the first MSFL Defensive Player of the Week honor of Niemeyer's career. 

Niemeyer and the Knights return to action Saturday, traveling to Midway University for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
