Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Bellarmine University women's soccer team allowed just four shots in their 2-0 shutout of the Drury Panthers (5-3-1, 3-2-1 GLVC) on the road in Springfield, Mo. Sunday afternoon. The Knights were led by freshman forward
Mary Beth Gorham who contributed a goal and an assist in the win.
"I'm proud of our performance today," said head coach Jonathan Velotta. "A road win against a very good Drury team is a positive result."
Bellarmine (4-3-2, 3-2-1 GLVC) opened the scoring in the 14th minute. With assists from senior forward
Chelsea McCarty and senior midfielder
Lauren Boyd, Gorham beat sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Vaught for the game's first goal. Gorham's goal was her fifth of the season.
The next 53 minutes of gameplay were relatively uneventful. Neither team managed a shot in the last fifteen minutes of the first period and despite the shots in the second half, none found the back of the net until junior forward
Abby Janszen scored her third of the year in the 67th minute.
Janszen doubled the Knights' lead when a ball played from Gorham found the Burlington, Ky. native five yards out from goal, and she capitalized to bolster the Knights' advantage. The game would end with the same 2-0 score.
"The team bought in to the plan of getting players behind the ball and looking to counter" said Velotta.
The Knights defense displayed another strong performance against Drury, allowing just four shots. Bellarmine is allowing fewer than eight shots per game and has allowed four or fewer shots in a game three separate times this season, including allowing just three shots in a win over #12 William Jewell on Sept. 22.
"It was one of our best defensive performances of the season and we were opportunistic with our attacking chances" said Velotta.
Gorham led all players with three shots on the day. She leads all Great Lakes Valley Conference freshmen in goals, shots and points. McCarty is best in the GLVC in assists with six on the season. With nine regular season games still remaining, McCarty's six assists this year make her tied for third on Bellarmine's single-season assist record list.
BU sophomore goalkeeper
Erin Ottman started her fourth game of the season, and has yet to allow a goal.
Bellarmine looks to extend their three game unbeaten streak as they come home to Owsley B. Frazier Stadium on Friday, Oct. 4 for a conference matchup with Lewis University at 3:55 p.m.
