Knights 'set' Panthers straight in comeback victory

Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Lately there had been a shortage of goals for the Bellarmine University women's soccer team, so Knights Coach Chris Tinius stressed the need for heightened focus on set pieces.

His squad clearly took the message to heart, as sophomore forward Mary Beth Gorham drilled a deep free kick and senior midfielder Emily Hollander buried a penalty kick as the Knights grabbed a key 2-1 comeback victory over Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Drury on Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

"I'm very proud of the girls for finding a way to pull out the win," Tinius said. "We've said all year that we don't have to play perfectly for 90 minutes, but we have to play and compete for 90 minutes. When you do that, all of the sudden the bounces tend to go your way."

With the victory over Drury (5-3-3, 3-3-3 GLVC), Bellarmine (8-2-2, 6-1-2) has now put together a six-game unbeaten streak, including three straight come-from-behind wins at home. However, the Knights were coming off a pair of ties on the road in which they only produced one goal over the two games.

The scoring struggles carried over into the first half against the Panthers, who grabbed a 1-0 lead with only 44 seconds left before halftime as Emily Cline spotted Gabby Menendez for a goal.

Bellarmine wasn't able to convert on any of its six shot attempts in the first half, but the Knights managed to sink two of their four chances in the second half before holding off a furious charge by Drury that resulted in the Panthers finishing with a 16-10 advantage in shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Poteet had multiple saves late to preserve the victory.

Bellarmine got in position to win by capitalizing on set pieces. In the 63rd minute, Gorham lined up for a free kick from nearly 40 yards out and fired off a rocket that zoomed into the right corner of the net for the tying goal. It was her team-leading seventh score of the season.

In the 77th minute, freshman forward Katie Fernandez was tripped in the box, and the Knights were awarded a penalty kick. Hollander, who sank the decisive penalty kick in the 2011 GLVC Tournament finals, stepped up and laced the go-ahead goal.

"We talked in the scouting report about the importance of set pieces if we're struggling to score through the flow of the game," Tinius said. "Credit Mary Beth and Emily on their execution in those moments in helping us get a crucial win on our home turf. It was fitting for both to get those goals because their play helped lead to those chances."

Drury didn't allow Bellarmine to rest easy after Hollander's first goal of the season. The Panthers unloaded six shots inside the last 10 minutes, with Poteet turning them back with three saves in that span, including one diving effort where she batted away a would-be goal.

The final was in doubt all the way to the end, as Drury had a corner kick with 28 seconds left. BU's defense held firm, not allowing a last-gasp shot opportunity.

Poteet finished with six saves, while counterpart Tina Haberberger had two.

Bellarmine hosts Missouri S&T at noon on Sunday. The game has been designated as Senior Day for the Knights. Fans unable to attend may follow the game on live stats.
