Knights field hockey enters crucial 3-matches-in-3-days road trip

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The beginning of a six-match road swing for the Bellarmine University field hockey team was a success. Now the Knights will look to tackle the sizable middle portion.

Bellarmine (9-5, 3-2 Eastern College Athletic Conference) travels to South Carolina to meet ECAC rival Newberry (5-8, 1-4) at 5 p.m. (ET) Friday before heading to North Carolina to face Belmont Abbey (2-8) at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Knights will then head back to South Carolina to clash with ECAC counterpart Limestone (8-6, 4-1) at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Bellarmine is one game back of Limestone and Lindenwood in the conference standings. Newberry is in fourth place. The Knights defeated the Wolves 7-1 at home on Sept. 23. Belmont Abbey is an affiliate member of the ECAC, and the Crusaders' results against league opponents don't count toward the conference standings this season. Bellarmine won the first meeting between the two teams, 3-1, on Oct. 1 at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. The Knights fell 3-2 in overtime to Limestone at home on Sept. 30.

After playing 10 of its first 12 matches at home, Bellarmine concludes the regular season with a half-dozen matches on the road. The Knights opened that stretch with a 2-0 win at Mercy and a 4-0 victory against Molloy. Junior midfielder Elle Lichte, junior defender Mary Ringwald and freshman goalkeeper Heather Gregory were honored with ECAC Offensive, Defensive and Rookie of the Week accolades, while senior forward Kathryn Schneidtmiller pushed her team-leading goal total to 11.

Newberry is coming off a 6-0 loss to Queens University of Charlotte on Wednesday. Caityln Warren leads the Wolves with six goals.

Belmont Abbey is just as busy as Bellarmine. The Crusaders face Molloy tonight and Pace on Friday before their contest with the Knights. Tyla Goodsell-Matthews leads the team with seven goals.

Limestone has a very difficult back to back this weekend. The Saints host Lindenwood on Saturday before welcoming in Bellarmine on Sunday. Kate Norman is pacing Limestone with seven goals.
