LOUISVILLE, Ky.—After 10 straight games on the road, the Bellarmine University field hockey team will close its regular season with home games on Friday and Saturday in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The Knights host Eastern College Athletic Conference foes Newberry College and Belmont Abbey College in their final homestand with games scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. and Saturday at noon.
On Friday morning, Bellarmine and Newberry will meet for the second time of the season. The Knights pulled a 2-1 victory at Newberry back on Sept. 30 when
Elle Lichte registered a "golden goal" 4:58 into overtime.
The Knights and Crusaders also have met once this season, with Bellarmine taking a 3-2 decision as
Megan Carney scored the gamewinner in the second half.
The games have implications for the upcoming ECAC postseason tournament, which will be held Nov. 3-5 at Lindenwood University. Only the top four teams advance to the tourney, so Bellarmine, Belmont Abbey, and Newberry are essentially playing for the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds. Limestone and Lindenwood have already locked up the top two seeds.
Bellarmine and Newberry have identical records heading into the final two games: 6-10 overall and 3-5 in league play. Belmont Abbey, meanwhile, is 7-9 with a 2-6 ECAC record. The Mercy Mavericks have been eliminated from the postseason equation with a final league record of 2-8.
Prior to squaring off against the Crusaders on Saturday, Bellarmine will honor its 2017 senior class:
Carly Anson,
Megan Carney,
Amber Hill,
Amanda Jaworski,
Elle Lichte,
Lillie Nitzken,
Mary Ringwald,
Helena Varga, and
Sara Wilder.
