LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team epitomized the phrase "spreading the wealth" on Thursday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Seven different players accounted for the seven goals over three 30-minute periods in a 7-0 victory over Spalding in Bellarmine's second exhibition of the preseason.
The scores were registered by senior defender
Madison Stephens, sophomore defender
Alex Harber, sophomore midfielder
Samantha Ferry, junior forward
Spencer Grim, sophomore defender
Kira Steinke, freshman forward
Isabella Zamborini and freshman forward
Bailee Locke.
Zamborini added two assists and Grim, senior midfielder
Audrey Van Der Elst and junior forward
Kenzi Gooley chipped in one apiece. Bellarmine scored four of its goals in the third period after scoring once in the first stanza and netting two goals in the second frame.
Stephens scored Bellarmine's first goal in the 13th minute when her shot from roughly 30 yards was mishandled by Spalding's goalkeeper and trickled into the net. It was the Knights' only score in a lackluster start.
"The first 30-minute period was a bit of a wakeup call for us," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "Give Spalding credit: The ball was in our attacking half a lot simply because of our athleticism, but they were the better team with respect to style of play and executing a game plan. We got a fortunate goal to be up 1-0, but we made sure the team knew that it wasn't to our standard."
The Knights lived up to that standard frequently over the final two stanzas.
In the second period, Van Der Elst connected with Harber streaking down the left side. Harber dribbled toward the left of the goal area and sank a shot into the far corner of the net. The Knights added a second goal in the frame when Gooley made a run inside the left of the goal area and crossed to Ferry for an easy punch-in.
"To our kids' credit, they answered the call," Tinius said. "The increase in our tempo in the second 30 minutes was great to see and really changed the game. It enabled us to stretch the game and get them chasing and opened things up a lot. We went on to score a couple very good goals, and some of the kids that we challenged early made the most of their second opportunity in the third period."
In the goal-filled third period, Grim pounded a header inside the far post off a free kick from Zamborini that triggered the explosion. Steinke rammed in a rebound off a Zamborini shot, Zamborini followed with a goal and Grim spotted Locke with a lead pass that Locke converted into the Knights' seventh goal of the exhibition.
Bellarmine finished with a 23-2 advantage in shots, including 14-1 on goal. The Knights had a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Bellarmine concludes the preseason with a 5 p.m. (ET) exhibition Saturday at Centre.
"The concern is that we are 10 days in and still haven't put one complete session together from start to finish — practice or game," Tinius said. "Some of our top moments have been better than I would have guessed at this point, but next week you don't get a break after 30 minutes to sort things out. You have to gut it out until halftime or be down a goal. We need to figure that out so the multitude of good things we are doing aren't sabotaged by little breaks along the way. We get one more chance to sort through it against a very good Centre team on Saturday."
