LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine field hockey team will close out the home portion of its season this weekend as the Knights play three games in four days.
On Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Bellarmine (7-3) and Belmont Abbey (6-5) will meet for the second time this season. Then on Saturday, Bellarmine is set to face Newberry College at 3 p.m. with senior day activities scheduled just ahead of game time. The Knights close their home schedule with a 1 p.m. Sunday contest against the Lions of Lindenwood.
The Lions also will be playing three games in four days. Lindenwood will take on Newberry prior to the Bellarmine-Belmont Abbey game on Thursday, and the Lions and Crusaders will meet at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
In Bellarmine's rematch with Belmont Abbey, the Crusaders will be looking to avenge a 5-2 home loss to the Knights back on Sept. 29. In that game, Bellarmine controlled the action for the most part, jumping out to 5-0 lead before Belmont-Abbey score twice in the game's final 1:02 to make the final margin three.
Saturday's contest will be the first of two meetings between the Knights and Wolves. Newberry comes into this week's play 7-3 on the season after sweeping a pair of games from Bellarmine in 2018. This year's marquee wins for the Wolves include a 2-1 victory over Limestone in their last outing and a 2-0 triumph over then-No. 10 Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Losses this season have come against then-No. 1 Millersville, Queens, and Belmont Abbey.
Prior to Saturday's game, Bellarmine will hold senior day activities as they honor seven players:
Mariana Flores Gutierrez,
Heather Gregory,
Merit Harris,
Brittanny Macnab,
Lindsay Reynolds,
Lorna Screen and
Storm Thompson.
Sunday's opponent, Lindenwood, is an old nemesis of the Knights. Bellarmine has squared off 41 times with the Lions, and Lindenwood holds a 26-15 edge in the all-time series, including the last six meetings. The last Bellarmine win over Lindenwood came in the 2015 season.
This season, the Lions are 6-4 with perhaps the biggest feather in their cap being a 3-1 victory over St. Anselm when the Hawks were ranked No. 3. In fact, Lindenwood is the only team to have scored on St. Anselm to date.
