Women's soccer set for ASUN matchup with FGCU

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team remains in the Sunshine State for its second ASUN game of the week as the Knights are set to face FGCU at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday in Fort Myers, Florida.

FGCU (4-5, 1-0 ASUN), like Stetson on Thursday, is a conference opponent Bellarmine (2-2-5, 0-1) did not face last season as the league schedule was constricted due to the pandemic.

"We were a bit coddled in the spring by seeing the same teams multiple times and more regional travel," Knights Coach Chris Tinius said. "This will be the second part of an introduction to what life on the road is really all about. We didn't handle the first part very well, and Stetson pounced on us. We're still learning; hopefully we show the mentality that is required."

LAST TIME OUT
Bellarmine opened ASUN action in the aforementioned contest against Stetson, dropping a 1-0 decision in double overtime. The Knights played extra sessions for the sixth time this season.

Bellarmine was shut out for the second straight outing but was nearly even with the Hatters in shots, trailing 11-10 in total and 6-4 on frame. It was the seventh time in nine games where the Knights limited their opponent to one goal or less.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU opened ASUN play Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Eastern Kentucky. The Eagles' nonconference schedule was largely packed with in-state foes, including No. 1 Florida State, and they notched wins at Florida Atlantic and Florida International.

FGCU's scoring has been balanced, with nine players accounting for the team's 11 goals. The Eagles were picked third in the ASUN preseason coaches' poll after going 7-3-2 overall and 4-2 in league play last season while Kajsa Lang and Louise Lillback earned ASUN Preseason All-Conference acknowledgement.

"We have a lot of respect for Florida Gulf Coast as one of the standards in this league," Tinius said. "They have some talented individual attacking talent. They have tested themselves with a difficult out-of-conference schedule."
