LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After a league-wide bye week, Bellarmine sprint football will put its undefeated record on the line at home against Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods College this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

The Knights (3-0) and Pomeroys (3-0) are the only two remaining unbeaten teams in the Midwest Sprint Football League.  Saturday's matchup also pits Bellarmine's league-leading defense against the MSFL's top offense.

Bellarmine's defense has been fantastic and gotten better by the week this season.  The Knights held Midway to 15 points, Fontbonne to six points, and shut out Quincy.  While the offense has yet to break the 20-point barrier, Bellarmine has done enough on that side of the ball to control the game and make timely plays.

Most recently, Bellarmine's defense took charge in the win at Quincy on Oct. 1.  Brenden Reid's 43-yard interception return with under a minute remaining sealed the win for the Knights.  Reid also recorded 11 tackles, helping him claim MSFL Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this year.  Winning player of the week awards has not been something new for the Knights, however, as at least one Bellarmine player has earned the award each week this season.

On offense, a big key to Bellarmine's success this year has been the rushing attack.  The Knights are averaging 136 yards on the ground per game, compared to 137 yards per game through the air.  On the flip side, opponents have been unable to run the ball effectively against BU, averaging just 42 rushing yards per contest.  The defense has also been remarkably consistent in the red zone – opponents are 0-8 scoring touchdowns after moving inside the 20-yard line this season.

The combination of Brenden Reid and Devan Hendricks at running back has been excellent, totaling 125 yards per game on the ground.  At quarterback, Dylan Gough has thrown for three touchdowns and 412 yards this season.  Reid also leads the team in receiving yards with 117 this season, while Joshua Bivens has been a big-play target, accumulating five catches for 114 yards this year.

On defense, Devan Hendricks has a team-best 23 tackles and two interceptions, followed by Caleb Murray with 22 this season.  Reid and Royce Hall have been effective getting into the backfield, recording four tackles for loss each.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods has utilized a very different style of play this year.  The Pomeroys are the highest scoring team in the league, averaging over 34 points per game.  In its most recent contest, SMWC defeated Midway 48-22 at home.  Most of the Pomeroy attack comes through the air, as they average 302 passing yards per game.  The reigning MSFL Offensive Player of the Week is quarterback Brennon Landry…and for good reason.  He threw for 435 yards and four touchdowns against Midway, while rushing for two touchdowns.
