LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After an exhilarating inaugural win for Bellarmine sprint football, the Knights will host their first ever home game on Saturday.
Bellarmine (1-0) will take on the Fontbonne Griffins (0-1) at Saint Xavier High School – kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Saturday.
The Knights scrapped out a 17-15 victory over Midway to win the Bourbon Barrel this past week, and the individual accolades followed. Senior defensive back and running back
Devan Hendricks was named Midwest Sprint Football League (MSFL) Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman kicker
Ben Valle was named MSFL Special Teams Player of the Week. Hendricks corralled two interceptions, including a key pick at the goal line in the fourth quarter. He also made a team-high nine tackles with three pass break-ups. Valle converted on both of his extra points and hit the game-winning field goal from 33 yards out with only 44 seconds remaining.
As a team, Bellarmine outgained Midway 293-222 and 128-44 on the ground. Big plays including a 53-yard touchdown run from running back
Brenden Reid and three interceptions were big positives. Head Coach
Harold Davis, however, understands there's plenty of room for improvement:
"It was good to get the win, but we have a lot of work to do on both sides of the ball," Davis said. "I'm really proud of our team for continuing to work until the end of the game."
Dylan Gough got the start at quarterback for the Knights, completing 12 of 27 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown. Reid led Bellarmine with 94 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while Hendricks added 62 yards. Reid, Hendricks,
Brock Snead, D.J. Griffin, and
Joshua Bivens all caught passes for the Knights last game.
Defensively, along with the outstanding performance from Hendricks,
Louinel Plaisir made eight tackles with a team-high 1.5 sacks. He also added an interception in the second half.
Fontbonne enters off a 7-0 home loss to Quincy. The Griffins were unable to generate much offense, totaling 112 yards and three first downs. Fontbonne also committed five turnovers with two interceptions and three fumbles lost. After allowing a first quarter touchdown, the defense held strong, giving up just 160 yards to Quincy for the game. The Griffins defense also snagged three interceptions, but the offense was unable to convert.
Fontbonne's Zapher Lea went 5-12 for 54 yards and two interceptions at quarterback. Darrion White was the Griffins' leading rusher with six carries for 49 yards, most of which came off a 42-yard scamper. Avion Bass led Fontbonne with 10 tackles, while Clayton Arrowoo, Adonis Whitney, and Donte Lewis all claimed interceptions.
Ticket purchases are only available at the gate. Saturday's game can also be viewed on BU Knights Sports Network with Jeff Milby and Jim Leisure on the call.
