LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine University track and field had members compete this week in Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational and Western Carolina's Catamount Classic.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational,
Chase Atkins set a new men's overall and freshman program record in the 5000 after finishing third in his heat in 14:25.15. The mark just edged out Chris Striegel's overall record of 14:25.94 set in 2016, and
Nolan Hester's freshman record of 14:29.89 set last season.
Jackson Gordon set a new freshman program record in the 800 after finishing in 1:52.00. Gordon, who placed 17th in the open event, topped Joey Blue's 1:53.07 that had stood since 2009. Junior
Nick Lewis won his heat in the 10000 after finishing in 30:04.12.
At the Catamount Classic,
Alex Cole broke his own freshman program record in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.18, eclipsing his previous best of 51.83. Cole won the event by 1 centimeter on his final throw.
Cole also placed third in the discus, and sophomore
Luke Wunsch was eighth. Sophomore
Trevor Holbrook was fourth in the 400 and ninth in the 200.
On the women's side at the Catamount Classic, Bellarmine had three in the top 10 of the 400, as sophomore
Chloe Freilinger placed third, senior
Katrina Kamarute fifth and freshman
Kylah Brooks ninth. Freilinger (seventh) and Kamarute (ninth) were also top 10 in the 200.
Freshman
Sierra Oesterling took third in the 1500, as did sophomore
Hannah Ellis in the 5000. Senior
Jenna Walker was fifth in the 100 hurdles.
Freshman
Avery Koch took fifth in the discus and was ninth in the shot put, an event in which sophomore
Katie Monheimer placed sixth. Sophomore
Naimah Slaughter was top 10 in the triple jump (eighth) and long jump (10th).
Bellarmine will compete Friday and Saturday in the EKU Rick Erdmann Twilight.
