New records, several top finishes delivered by T&F at EKU meet

RICHMOND, Ky. — Bellarmine University track and field competed Friday and Saturday in Eastern Kentucky University's Rick Erdmann Twilight.

Alex Cole set new overall and freshman program records in the men's discus after placing first with a toss of 49.29 meters. Cole broke Elliot Mattingly's overall mark of 48.93, which had stood since 2009. He topped his own freshman record of 46.55. Cole also placed second in the hammer throw.

Jackson Gordon set new overall and freshman benchmarks in the 400 after capturing first in 47.57. Torian Vaughn (47.86) had held both marks since 2014. Junior Ike Boling and sophomore Trevor Holbrook followed Gordon in second and third, respectively.

Holbrook, Boling, senior Ryan Hawkins and Gordon secured top honors in the 4x400 relay in 3:19.46. Gordon (fifth), Holbrook (sixth) and freshman Zac Hutslar (seventh) were all top 10 in the 200.

Freshman Zander Hooten was the runner-up in the 400 hurdles and fourth in the 110 hurdles. Sophomore Hunter Griffin placed third in the 5000 and was followed by sophomore Josh Meiman in fifth and sophomore Ryan Burchett in eighth. Sophomore Luke Wunsch added a sixth in the discus.

On the women's side, sophomore Chloe Freilinger placed first in the 800 in 2:16.28 and was the runner-up in the 400, which also saw senior Katrina Kamarute finish third and freshman Kylah Brooks take ninth. Freshman Sierra Oesterling also took top honors in the 5000 in 17:48.98.

Kamarute, Brooks, Freilinger and freshman Jansen Story placed second in the 4x400 relay. Senior Jenna Walker earned a third in the 100 hurdles, as did freshman Avery Koch in the discus, and she was followed by sophomore Katie Monheimer in fifth.

Monheimer also placed fifth in the shot put, as did sophomore Naimah Slaughter in the long jump. Sophomore Lauren DeBold and Koch were sixth and 10th, respectively, in the hammer throw.

The Knights will conclude the regular season Friday and Saturday in the University of Louisville's Clark Wood Open.
